Hurt Partners Architects is an architectural design office that brings passion to the idea that architecture is about buildings that have a greater sum than their assembled components. By understanding and utilizing materials, through design, spaces can be created that integrate with the landscape and bring a quality that is both tangible and inspiring.

Our office has worked on and is currently working on a wide variety of projects of varying scopes - from small residential additions ($100,000) to large commercial projects ($35,000,000). Our team’s past work experience and varied cultural backgrounds bring a variety of perspectives that allows us to engage in many types of projects. With each project, under Tom Hurt’s leadership, we pursue a rigorous design process in traditional media aided with the latest in technology. Tom Hurt, principal architect, received a Masters Degree in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990, graduating at the top of his class. Tom went on to work for the internationally acclaimed firm, Behnisch, Behnisch & Partners in Stuttgart, Germany, earning his German architectural license and working on large commercial and institutional projects with that firm for 5 years. Afterwards in Austin, Tom joined the Lawrence Speck Studio at Page Southerland Page Architects as lead designer for the CSC Buildings in downtown Austin.

In 2000, Tom founded Tom Hurt Design Office, a practice focusing primarily on residential architecture. During this time, Tom established himself as a consistently excellent and thoughtful architect, recognized not only by the architectural profession, but also by the general public.

In 2004, Tom began collaborating with Brett Rhode on projects, eventually forming Rhode:Hurt Architects which increased the range, scope and complexity of projects and project types for the office. In 2007, Tom created Hurt Partners Architects taking with him an experienced and established team who have now worked together on a range of projects including multifamily, low-income, single-family, office, mixed-use, and institutional.

We believe that our homes and neighborhoods should be healthy, vibrant places that uplift the spirit and gracefully fit our needs. We call for an end to poor construction, bad design, misleading marketing, unfair lending practices and environmental neglect in the housing industry. We acknowledge our collective responsibility to create CLOSE, SIMPLE, LIGHT places to live that leave a positive legacy for future generations.

provides design focused information that homeowners can use to improve the quality of how and where they live. It takes its name from the slow food movement which arose as a reaction to the processed food industry. The sprawl of cookie cutter housing that surrounds us is like fast food - standardized, homogenous, and wasteful. It contributes to a too fast life that is bad for us, our cities, and the environment. In the same way that slow food raises awareness of the food we eat and how these choices affect our lives, Slow Home empowers you to take more control of your home and improve the quality of how you live while reducing your environmental impact and futureproofing the long term investment value of your home.
